Malice: A Supernatural Thriller

Dread Central on Malice’s director, Phillip Cook:

Philip Cook’s 1992 Invader is a witty pre-“X-Files”-ish science fiction flick about a reporting investigating UFO sightings that turn out to be the work of an ultra-nationalistic, megalomaniacal, giant robot built in part from reverse engineered UFO parts that decides to nuke the rest of the world for the greater glory of the United States of America.

Cook’s entertaining 2003 supernatural “Mad Max”-ish Despiser revolves around a small band of characters trying to find their way out of Purgatory while having to deal with the monstrous occupant of a crashed UFO that doesn’t realize it’s dead and has made itself overlord of the afterlife.

With Malice it seems Mr. Cook is keeping with what seems to be his modus operandi of taking about a decade between projects. He may truly be the Terrence Malick of micro-budget genre filmmakers.

Feminist Frequency: Lego & Gender

FF host Anita Sarkeesian takes on LEGO’s troubling gender-specific toys:  

“LEGO announced that after 4 years of intensive research, they have finally come up with a LEGO product that fulfills the desires of “how girls naturally build and play.” This new theme is called LEGO Friends and it’s a pink and purple, gender segregated, suburban wasteland populated by Barbie/Bratz style dolls.”

After years of releasing music as a singer-songwriter, Brooklyn-based musician Lauren Zettler needed to make a change. Her new electro-pop project, Lightyear, is catchy, yet dramatic, and shows her as graceful, but still vulnerable about her emotions. Drawing from influences like Emily Haines, Feist and Robyn while also tapping into her own technical skills — she’s a classically trained pianist and studied film scoring at the Berklee School of Music — Zettler is able to create beautifully fragile moments that build up to powerfully stirring points.

Oddly, a cooking show hosted by Napoleon makes perfect sense. That’s not to say that it’s not a weird concept. It totally is. But it works.

Orange Juice in Bishops garden

As a group of teens navigate the perilous pathways of the nineties, the internet looks on in rapt wonder. In the realm of Melrose Place meets Beverly Hills 90210, Orange Juice in Bishops garden took the formula and turned it on its head, offering characters with well-rounded personalities and a script seemingly written by human beings, instead of an endless row of monkeys on typewriters.

The show has been viewed in over 136 countries, with creator Otessa Ghadar winning a number of awards during its short two-year run. The show even garnered a strong lesbian and gay following thanks to its open-minded characters.

Disneycember is quickly coming to an end as Nostaligia Critic devotes just a few minutes to the animated Robin Hood film from 1973. Obviously, there are spoilers here, but if you havent seen it in 40 years… This is one of Disney’s best, and NC points out a number of great reasons why that is.
